The Pac-12 funding program was created in 2013 and is part of the entire Pac-12 student-athlete health and welfare program. The initiative is a collective effort among Pac-12 member universities to find ways to reduce injuries, share current best practices and the latest research, and conduct research to discover new ways to keep student athletes as safe as possible. The grant program prioritizes funding cutting-edge research by pooling the collective expertise of its members, including some of the most important research institutions in the world.

In addition to the findings and progress related to research funded by Pac-12, Pac-12 SAHWBI has also seen some recent notable publications, including "Surveillance and Testing of SARS-COV-2 Infection in the Asymptomatic Athlete Population", in conjunction with Pac-12 -12 COVID-19 testing conducted by the university and Pac-12's partnership with Quidel, and the "Pac-12 CARE Affiliate Program: Structure, Methodology, and Initial Results" related to research surrounding sports-related concussions.
