Collagen is the most abundant protein found in the body and is an essential protein, as it makes up much of your connective tissue and skin. Supplementing your diet with collagen can give your body extra support anywhere the collagen matrix is naturally found, such as skeletal muscle.

One scoop of Ancient Nutrition’s Multi Collagen Protein Powder consists of 10 grams of collagen, 9 grams of protein, and 90 milligrams of vitamin C, with only 35 calories. The label notes that this product contain around 2 billion CFUs (colony forming units) of probiotics.

There are five flavor options for the Collagen Protein powder: Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry lemonade, cold brew and cucumber lime, as well as an unflavored option. The variety allows this powder to be made into a range of consumables, for example, almond milk mixed with the chocolate powder, or coconut water and strawberry lemonade.

This product is considered a fermented collagen which results in “easier-to-digest peptides that aren’t altered by heat or chemical processing” as per the website. This powder packs a punch with non-GMO ingredients, and is paleo- and keto-friendly. It’s also free of gluten, dairy, nuts, grain and soy, and is made from pasture-raised, grass-fed animals free from hormones and antibiotics. All ingredients are sustainably sourced.

Ancient Nutrition strictly follows current good manufacturing practices (cGMPs), established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), according to the company. All of its products are third-party certified and require a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) for every lot manufactured, ensuring its testing is conclusive to what is claimed on the label.

“I always consider how easy a product is to use and take this into account when thinking of patient compliance—as we know herbs, supplements or even medication may not work as effectively if they are taken as suggested,” explains Colleen Tyler N.D., a naturopathic physician and beauty expert. “This particular collagen powder blends easily with liquids and is even a good addition to baked goods,” she adds. “Food is our best medicine and high quality food and supplements can provide some of the best nutrition we need.”

As an acupuncturist and herbal medicine practitioner, Ancient Nutrition’s Multi Collagen Protein Powder sparked my interest when I looked at the ingredient list, and saw not only widespread collagen types, but added vitamin C and probiotics, allowing me to take less supplements a day.

I tried the unflavored variety, which this company labels “pure.” I enjoy mixing collagen powder with a variety of liquids, such as water, green juices or coconut or oat milk. It was relatively tasteless and did not change the consistency of my beverages much. I only did one scoop servings, because when I doubled the dose I felt like the taste and flavor stood out more in my concoctions.

I tried this product daily for a month. Most days I took one scoop of collagen and added it with a green powder and added a few other herbs such as reishi mushroom. I mixed the herbs and powders with half water and half oatmilk.

I believe I noticed my nails growing a bit stronger and losing less hair when I brushed, but I have been taking a collagen supplement for a few months prior. I do believe that continued use of a product such as this would make a more noticeable difference, if any.

Marketed as odorless, there are a few accounts online of people disliking the smell or taste, so depending on how sensitive you are, this may, or may not be an issue.

With more than 10,000 reviews on its website, ranking an average of 4.6 out of 5 stars, many consumers also reported enjoying this product. Some people, however, noted that it left them slightly bloated, or that no significant changes had been noticed after a few weeks of daily consumption.

Overall, I was quite happy with this product, and found it easy to take and enjoyed the lack of flavor and texture. Vitamin C and probiotics are supplements that I don’t tend to add into my daily routine. It felt good to have a month of taking these regularly as well.
