Ciprofloxacin is a second-generation fluoroquinolone drug and a broad-spectrum bactericide. Its bactericidal effect depends on the concentration of the drug, and sensitive strains can be killed 20-30 minutes after administration. It has an effect on the replication of bacteria in both the stationary and growing phases. It is generally believed that it interferes with DNA supercoiling and DNA synthesis by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (type II topoisomerase).
