Polysorbate 85, also known as polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan trioleate consists of sorbitol, ethylene oxide and oleic acid. It has a molecular formula of C100H188O28. At room temperature, it is in the form of a pale-yellow to orange oily liquid. It is an O/W emulsifier with an HLB value of 11.0. It is soluble in ethanol, ethyl acetate and acetone; it is also soluble in most mineral and vegetable oil. And it can disperse in water. In crude oil production, polysorbate 85 acts as emulsifier, paraffin inhibitor.
