Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a sulfur-containing organic compound that is colorless and odorless at room temperature. It is a hygroscopic and flammable liquid.It has the characteristics of high polarity, high boiling point, good thermal stability, aprotic, miscible with water, soluble in ethanol, propanol, benzene, chloroform and other most organic matters, known as the "universal solvent".In the presence of acids, heating produces small amounts of methyl mercaptan, methanal, dimethyl sulfur, methanesulfonic acid and other compounds.There is decomposition phenomenon at high temperature, chlorine can have a violent reaction, burning in the air to give a light blue flame.It can be used as organic solvent, reaction medium and intermediate in organic synthesis.It can also be used as dyeing solvent, dedyeing agent, dyeing carrier for synthetic fiber, and absorbent for recovery of acetylene and sulfur dioxide.
