Beijing: Pakistan and China jointly carry out feed research, which will greatly benefit the rapid development of Pakistan's animal husbandry.

"In Pakistan, at least 60% of feed additives are imported from China. I hope that through my research and learning in China, Pakistan will be more self-reliant in this area."

This is what was said by Dr. Waseem Abbas and Dr. Waseem Abbas, product manager of Jawad Impex International Lahore Animal Nutrition Feed Additives Division. College of Animal Science and Technology, China Agricultural University (CAU), Beijing, China.

He just finished a 14-day feed formula seminar organized by Hunan Agricultural Group. During this period, he and more than 20 Pakistani participants including farmers, students and scientists learned about animal nutrition requirements, feed and feed through a series of courses. Formula design, application and development of feed in animal husbandry, feed processing technology and feed additives.

"Additives, meal and grains are an indispensable part of feed. On the contrary, they are essential for the balance and sufficient nutrition in feed, thereby improving its efficiency and quality. This is what Pakistan urgently needs," Waseem said.

According to a study by the University of Illinois, feed cost is the largest input cost for milk production (estimated at 35% to 50%).

In Pakistan, livestock production accounts for more than 60% of the total agricultural output value. Approximately 10% to 15% of commercial farmers and enterprises need feed additives to reduce costs while maximizing yields for the entire dairy product manufacturer.

About 85% of farmers’ families raise traditional feeds that are limited to satisfying the nutritional needs of animals. Now farmers are turning to modern/balanced feeds, which include feed additives to improve feed efficiency. Similarly, in poultry, feed additives provide sufficient nutrition for poultry.

According to international practice, additives are commonly used in feed. Among them, vitamin premixes, mineral premixes, amino acids, enzymes, toxin-binding agent antioxidants, choline chloride, etc. are the most commonly used feed additives.

However, the high price and inefficient quality of feed in Pakistan have restricted the relevant sectors (meat, milk and egg production) to their full potential. "For example, soy is the main protein source for poultry/dairy feed.

However, due to the cross-border transaction barriers caused by the pandemic, prices in the Pakistani market have soared, and people have to switch to less nutritious ingredients, namely vegetable and animal protein sources," Waseem said.

“During my studies in China, I visited many large feed manufacturers and found that China is using advanced innovative technologies and machinery, such as pellet mills, grinders, etc.,” Waseem observed.

Waseem co-authored two papers in SCI indexed journals, namely dietary yeast, supplementation of glucan can improve eggshell color and fertilized egg hatchability, and enhance the immune function of breeders. Dietary encapsulated essential oils and organic acid mixtures can improve intestines. Dao healthy broilers are challenged by necrotizing enteritis.

"Poultry feed is related to the income of 1.5 million people in Pakistan. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from Professor Guo Yuming and Associate Professor Wang Zhong at the State Key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition provided by the Chinese government. They are both outstanding scholars in this field." Waseem said. .

In 2020, China, like European countries, banned the use of antibiotics in feed to minimize the hazards of residues of the substance. If it is not controlled, by 2050, the number of deaths in the world may exceed cancer. "We are also working hard to eliminate antibiotic content in feed as a growth promoter in Pakistan," Waseem said.
