The difference between hair loss and hair loss-and how to deal with it

Have you noticed that every time you brush your hair, you will lose more hair? You may be experiencing shedding-something that happens to everyone. "It's normal to lose about 50 to 100 hairs a day," said Kali Ferrara, a hair stylist in New York City. However, if you lose more hair than usual, it may be caused by many hormonal, mental and physical factors.

We consulted with Ferrara and Bridgette Hill, a certified hairdresser and founder of Root Cause Scalp Analysis, to find out why your hair may fall out, and some best practices that can be incorporated into your hair care routine.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, there is a difference between hair loss and hair loss. People may experience hair loss after significant weight loss, childbirth, stress or traumatic events, illness or even cessation of birth control. As you recover from the physical, emotional, or hormonal changes that caused the loss, your hair will gradually begin to return to normal volume.

"All hair loss is a form of telogen hair loss, or simply, hair loss caused by a sudden shock to body functions," Hill said. "It may be caused by hormones, mental, nutritional or physical stress." Hair loss may also be a symptom of vitamin deficiency (especially iron) or an autoimmune disease (such as hair loss).

On the other hand, hair loss may be hereditary, or it may result from rough hair products and too tight braids, buns, and ponytails. A dermatologist can help you distinguish between hair loss and hair loss.

"Regular scalp care is the most reliable preventive measure to prevent hair loss," Hill said. Similar to the pores on the face and body, the hair follicles on the scalp can become clogged by accumulation of oil, debris and products. "Clogged hair follicles may be injured and no longer grow hair," Ferrara said.

Use a bi-weekly scrub to keep your scalp clean, such as Kiehl's Amino Acid Scalp Scrub Detox Treatment ($36). It contains a mixture of 10 amino acids, salicylic acid and sea salt, which helps to remove oily scalp without excessively drying the skin.

When washing your hair, Hill recommends transferring your product to a bottle with a nozzle top to better stimulate the scalp. "You might also want to reconsider the brush you use to dry your hair," she said. "People who are not gentle enough can irritate the scalp and cause hair breakage." She recommends using a wild boar bristle brush, or a brush with a mixture of plastic and wild boar bristle.

"Our idea is to stay away from metal brushes, which will wear away the hair fibers and scalp," she said. In addition to using a gentle brush, Hill also advises not to comb your hair into tight buns, ponytails or corn braids, which can put pressure on your hair.

"A proper diet, proper hair and scalp care, and stress reduction can all work wonders for your hair growth," Ferrara said. However, if pre-shampoo treatments, loose ponytails, and gentler styling tools and products still cannot prevent your hair from falling out, then it may be time to see a doctor to rule out any potential health problems.

"I have a lot of new hair now, and my hair is silky and shiny. I am very grateful for this product."
